Exposed Aggregate

Exposed Aggregate

For your decorative concrete needs

Durability and Low Maintenance

Exposed aggregate concrete is known for its durability and resistance to wear and tear. The aggregates act as a protective layer, making the surface more robust and less prone to surface damage.

Versatility and Aesthetic Appeal

Exposed aggregate concrete offers a visually appealing and textured surface, creating a unique and sophisticated look for various applications.

Slip Resistance

The exposed surface of aggregates adds a textured finish to the concrete, contributing to increased slip resistance. This feature is particularly beneficial for outdoor spaces, driveways, and pathways where safety is a priority.

Sika® Rugasol® MH

Concrete surface retarder for horizontal and vertical surfaces

Sika® Rugasol® MH is a surface retarder used mainly for on site exposed aggregate work. Sika® Rugasol® MH surface retarder is used to expose aggregate on formed Portland cement based concrete surfaces, both vertical and horizontal.

About the process

Once the concrete has been placed and set, the decorative aggregate is ready to be revealed. There are several exposure methods contractors can choose from, depending on the look desired and size of the project. Only the top of the stone is exposed while the rest remains permanently embedded in the concrete.

Always Remember

As with any concrete project the same basic principals apply:

  • well compacted base course (dampened prior to placement)
  • well positioned reinforcement (if mesh is used)
  • sensible concrete thickness (we recommend 100mm min. for residential works)
  • consistent water curing as soon as possible
  • well positioned joints (tooled joints may be required at high risk areas)
  • saw cutting as soon as is practical.

Cutting, acid washing & sealing

Saw cutting into squares of 1.0-1.6m greatly enhances the appearance of coloured concrete pavements, acid washing will remove the fine cement slurry from the surface of the concrete providing a fine 'sandpaper' textured finish providing more grip but will also darken the concrete colour so take this into account when choosing your colour. Sealing the surface of your new exposed aggregate concrete will prevent staining and will enhance the natural beauty of the aggregate by giving it that 'wet look' appearance.
